Auto Insurance Tips:
1. Forget AAA, Get Roadside Assistance Do you know that your own insurance company provides roadside assistance such as towing, etc.?
My AAA membership just expired. The annual fee was $85.00 per year for 4 trips. I called my auto insurer, GEICO, and asked them to cost of adding roadside assistance to my policy. The answer: YES, the annual cost: $12 for 5 trips.
Hope this saves you money!
2. Get Med Pay...it pays! Do you have Medical Payments Coverage on your auto insurance policy? You should.
Medical Payments Coverage pays for reasonable medical and funeral expenses you incur as a result of an auto accident. The total amount of coverage depends on your policy, but typical limits are $5,000 or $10,000.
How does this help you? Let’s say you get in an accident and your medical expenses are $10,000. The at-fault driver’s insurance company offers you a $10,000 settlement offer.
a) Scenario 1: Med Pay Coverage of $10,000 – You have no bills left and you put $10,000 in your pocket
b) Scenario 2: No Med Pay Coverage – You owe $10,000 to your doctors and you are left with $0 for yourself.
It seems like a minor detail but it can make a huge difference if an accident occurs.
3. Waiving them through may cost YOU Stopped at a red light and someone want to pass in front of you to cross traffic? Be careful before you waive them through.
In Georgia, courts have held that if you signal to another driver that the way is safe for the other vehicle to pass, or to cross in front of you, you should realize that once the other driver relies on your signal, YOU may be liable for damages if that car gets into an accident while crossing. The determination will be left to a jury.
As the Georgia Supreme Court held: “one who undertakes to warn the public of danger [or lack of danger] and thereby induces reliance must perform his “good Samaritan” task in a careful manner.”
